What Are Open Position
Chords?
Open Position Chords are an important part
of making your playing sound rich and
expressive. An Open Position Chord is a
use to voice or create a chord.
An Open Position Chord is where you play the root note and the 7th
note of the chord in your left hand. Then in your right hand, you
play the melody note, the third note of the chord, the seventh note
again an octave higher and lastly any additional notes that are
called for such as 9ths and 11ths.
The main thing to remember is that an Open Chord uses both
hands and spans more than one octave with your left hand playing
the root and the seventh.
Throughout all of the Play Like Me songs as well as in our beginner
tutorials, I'll show you each step in building Open Position Chords.
I'll also show you some techniques that will help you build a
vocabulary of chords so when you see a chord name like a C7,
you'll automatically know how and where to play the chord.
