I just received Manha de Carnaval and can only say that I am thrilled beyond my wildest
dreams!
I have been searching for years for some method, book or system that would effectively teach
jazz piano, but my search has been fruitless up to now. Every time I bought someone’s book,
book/CD or video, I would eagerly dig into it hoping I’d find what I was looking for.
But I was disappointed every time that is, until I watched Bill Susman in action on this DVD.
The DVD is perfectly organized, and Bill is a master teacher. The DVD is also visually
pleasing, with Bill’s hands as well as the relevant portion of the lead sheet clearly visible at
all times. The student can easily repeat each measure or phrase as many times as needed to
reinforce it, thereby working at his/her own pace.
An intermediate piano student could realistically use this DVD to painlessly learn a jazz tune,
taking it through each advancing level, and be able to perform it proudly in a relatively short
time.I truly hope the Play Like Me DVDs garner the public acclaim they deserve.
There are so many methods out there that pale in comparison to this series. Play Like Me is
truly a landmark in the development of jazz education.
